Amra-Faye’s career began when she left the farmlands of the Eastern Cape in South Africa to perform in the Musical Spectaculars at Sun City. She spent the following years developing her skills in many musical genres going on to star in Viva Sun City at Sun City’s Extravaganza Theatre. Amra-Faye left Sun City for Monte Carlo where she performed as lead artist in the world famous Cabaret du Casino for two years. The next few years were spent in Europe and the Far East where she starred in two multi-million dollar Musical Spectaculars. Amra-Faye returned to South Africa in 1999 to create the principal role in Elvis Las Vegas, winning a Vita Award for most outstanding performance in Musical Theatre. She developed her skills further by obtaining a diploma in Contemporary Music at Allenby College, Johannesburg, Jazzwize Course in Jazz vocals, and Screen Acting Certificate (Int. School of Screen Acting, London)Thereafter she made a name for herself as a solo performer, writing and performing her own successful one-woman shows; Rouge Pulp; Drinks on Me (Vita Award, Best Musical Performance) and; It’s not where I Start. She continued to become a sought after soloist for Gala events including Spar International at Sun City Super bowl, and the South African VIP Gala at the Sydney Olympics, and Rugby World Cup banquet. On arriving in the United Kingdom, Amra-Faye was awarded the role of Velma in the original UK touring production of Chicago, and again later for the European tour. Other musicals to her credit include Sheila in A Chorus Line (Civic Theatre Jhb), Sandy in Grease (Jhb. Stadium Spectacular), Vi Moore in Footloose (UK tour), Mother Superior in Nunsense (Sneddon Theatre, Durban), Jack in Jack and the Beanstalk (Guild Theatre, East London), Mrs Darling in Peter Pan (UK). Amra-Faye returned to the role of Velma in the South African production of Chicago(Civic and Artscape Theatres- Naledi and Fleur du Cap Awards), after which she made her West End debut in the same role (Adelphi Theatre) and following that, her Broadway debut in January 2006 (Ambassador Theatre). Some highlights have been performances at the Royal Albert Hall for Europride 2006, 10th anniversary performance of Chicago, directed by Walter Bobbie, Anne Reinking and Rob Fisher, both on Broadway and in the West End. She continues to play this role alternating between The West End and Broadway. Amra-Faye took time out recently to return to her early skills as choreographer for a show in the Algarve Casino Theatre. Other interests include a recording venture of her original songs at Kenilworth Studios, London. |
